A Toolkit for Leading Through Uncertainty

For well over a decade, Wellpoint has used our own Trauma Informed Care model, the Seven Essential Ingredients, to guide our work. When the COVID-19 pandemic began, we looked to our model, along with the Neurosequential Model (NM™), to help us make sense of the world around us during a time of unprecedented stress and collective trauma.

Experience has shown us that when leaders practice compassion, it has obvious benefits to those they serve, but is also self-sustaining during times of prolonged stress. This is what drove our Trauma Informed Care training staff to develop a toolkit to support leaders navigating prolonged stress and great uncertainty.

Best Practice Put to Work (and Home)

The Compassion Curve represents how we engage the people we serve, act compassionately with each other and our families, as well as demonstrate compassion for the community. You don’t need to be a human services professional to use it; it works in our personal lives and with co-workers. These toolkits were built to be adaptive and relevant.

The Compassion Curve Toolkit

The Compassion Curve uses the framework of Wellpoint’s Seven Essential Ingredients and the Neurosequential Model (NM) to help us all navigate times of significant stress and adversity.

The Compassion Curve for Leaders

Part toolkit, part self-reflection, this resource asks leaders how they might best follow the call to accelerate compassion even during times of unprecedented collective uncertainty.

Placement and Caregiver Coordinator Supervisor

BA, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee

I have been employed with Wellpoint twice, totaling over 12 years. I was first hired as a Youth Counselor. After five years and receiving a few smaller promotions, I was then promoted to Unit Manager. After over four years in that role, I left in 2017 and returned in 2019 as placement liaison and was later promoted to the Placement and Caregiver Coordinator supervisor. I came back to Wellpoint as it has always felt like home to me and has provided me a level of comfort and opportunities for growth personally and professionally. Wellpoint has provided me a positive workplace and allowed me the tools I need to successfully serve our community. I continue to choose to work here as I feel wanted and appreciated. More importantly, I receive the challenge that keeps me motivated to come to work every day. Staff work well together and respect one another. I came to Wellpoint as I wanted a job fresh out of college and they provided me a career.

I graduated with my bachelor’s degree from UW-Milwaukee.

Child Welfare Mentor / MSW

I have been at Wellpoint since March of 2015. I’ve had many positions and have always loved my job. Prior to my current position, I worked as a Foster Care Licensing Specialist for almost two and a half years and before that, I was a Case Manager for four years. As a case manager, I was blessed to work directly with many families by helping them find the resources they needed. Seeing the beautiful smiles on the children and families when they achieved permanency brought me so much joy. As a Child Welfare Mentor, I enjoy training new staff and guiding new and current staff so that they feel supported. The work that we do can be overwhelming, but with help from others, we can do it.

I am part of the IV-E Program through Wellpoint and getting my masters in social work in December 2021.

Children and Families / Psychology and Behavioral Science, Minor: Sociology

I’ve been at Wellpoint for about 10 years. I’ve gotten the ability to work with very different populations and diverse groups of people over the past decade. As a case manager, I enjoyed working with families and providing them with the necessary resources to grow and thrive. As a supervisor, I have the opportunity to assist my staff and encourage them to strive toward the same goal. Everyone on staff is dedicated to the work that we do. Wellpoint has a flexible work environment and allows opportunities for growth and promotions within the agency.

I have bachelor’s in psychology and behavioral science with a minor in sociology as well as a master’s in social work with an emphasis on children and families.
